Owned by Maurice Kelly, a technologist and former Navy Intelligence Officer turned restaurateur, Matchbox Charlottesville opens this winter, boasting artisanal pizzas, creative American bistro fare, and a come-as-you-are vibe.

A definitive element of the Matchbox dining experience is the custom pizza oven that fires up signature thin-crust pizzas within minutes, and its surrounding pizza bar that offers a front-row view of the action. The bar at Matchbox is a focal point of the dining experience.. Hand-painted murals from local artists add further context to the neighborhood, and bring in a touch of personality as well.

Looking for a good hamburger and a beer! The bistro hamburger was cooked perfectly! It just didn't have any discernible cheese! Very small and bun was stale! I did enjoyed the beer $10 for a pint ! The menu listed the hamburger at $17 but they charge me $18! Nice atmosphere! Service was quirky youthfulness! I didn't feel connected but she did a good job! Very responsive! My wife loved the crab cake sandwich at $25! I think burtons burger is much better! We chose the place because it was convenient located! After spend $75 for ver mediocre food, I was a little disappointed! I think I could find something i could like at an affordable price! The fries wend beyond pedestrian quality! Zero quality! The sad part was I was still hungry afterwards! The waitress certainly try to up sale !

Nice ambiance, vibe and decor. Food was horrible and not worth the price. Worst fried shrimp I’ve ever had. We also ordered ribs. The flavor was tasty but they were dry as well as the cornbread.

We have our standard order, the large margarita pizza with the addition of sausage and the apple pear side salad. The combination is really good. If the pizza couldn’t get any better, we thought it was one of the best, maybe we were hungry. We like sitting at the bar because our food is delivered so fast keeping the pizza piping hot.

Server was great- very attentive, polite and friendly. The wait for food was a little long, and the noise level was a little too loud. But the food was great- pizza and salads were delicious!

We had a group of 8 in town for a football game. Matt was our server and did a great job. Three of us enjoyed a unique fig & black pepper old fashioned. Everyone’s food was delicious- fried shrimp, fish & chips, pizza, burgers (regular size & mini), salad, onion straws, salmon. We’ll remember it and hope to return.

The food was excellent and M-F 3-6pm is social hour with discounted drinks. It is definitely worth checking out and highly recommend it. IT is next to Imax Theater, dinner and a movie in one stop.

We have always had great service at Matchbox in the past, but this last time it was fair. We had our reservation booked through Open Table and when we arrived the hostess told us that they may not be able to seat us and she would have to check with the manager. This was despite the place being only half full and plenty of empty tables inside and out. Our waitress was extremely slow in taking our orders. I saw my drink sitting at the bar for 10 minutes while the ice melted before she brought it over. She forgot to bring over a lot of our sides and condiments, including my salad dressing, which I had to get up and ask for myself at the kitchen window. She never came back to check on us throughout our entire meal. One of our guests was missing his sides and condiments and asked for them, but did not receive them until asking a second time, which at that point was after everyone else had already finished their meals. We all wanted additional drinks, but never had the opportunity to order them since she never came back to check on our table. We tried to flag her down a couple of times, but either she didn’t see us or was looking right over us. And she wasn’t busy at the time. She was just hanging on the side of the bar looking around. We did see her sneak a puff of her Vape at one point though and then go over to exhale by the bar. Like I said we have always had great service in the past, but this particular night made us question if management had changed or something and if we will return again.

My friend and I waited over 45 minutes for a pizza. Once we finally got the pizza that we were splitting, it came out burnt and cold, which means that I’ve been sitting there after being burned in the oven. Our waitress never came back to see us so we ended up speaking to the manager, and we never got refills. This is the third time that the service here has been awful. The waitresses only care about the big parties and if you’re on a date with someone or just dining with a friend, they don’t come and check on you. Would not recommend.
