Chef Johnny Curiel debuts Mezcaleria Alma in Denver’s LoHi neighborhood, bringing the dynamic spirit of Mexico City to life with CDMX-inspired small plates and an expansive Mexican spirits menu. Located beside Curiel’s first solo restaurant, Alma Fonda Fina, Mezcaleria Alma marks the natural next chapter in Curiel’s culinary journey to share the beauty of Mexico through food. Each dish and drink draws from Curiel’s experiences in one of the world’s most renowned culinary capitals—a city where culture and tradition merge with global inspiration and constant innovation.

While Alma Fonda Fina is a love letter to the home-cooked traditions of Chef Curiel’s childhood—the comfort food found at traditional fondas across Mexico—Mezcaleria Alma embodies the unbridled innovation that defines CDMX.

In keeping with the spirit of a traditional mezcaleria found in Mexico City, the elongated, plush banquette anchors each table inviting guests to sink in and relax. Every corner of the dining room reveals treasures from Johnny’s travels, paired with captivating art like intricate Mexican embroidery that sparks conversation. At the heart of the space is a captivating mural on traditional bark paper by local Latinx artist Maria Morante, a powerful homage to Mexican folk art.

Spur of the moment decision to come here following a disappointing experience at Beckon the night before, and I was delightfully surprised. The flavors in each dish were excellent - bold and flavorful but well balanced. Their homemade chili oil and hot sauce were amazing. The sous chef worked at Alma Fonda Fina before moving over to open Mezcaleria, and she definitely brought over that fine dining level of detail to the plating. Cocktails were reasonably priced and delicious (their spin on a negroni is fantastic, and the beet spritz was great). Service was excellent at the chef’s counter - interactive, friendly, perfectly paced. I was running a few minutes late, and received a friendly text to let them know if I was on my way, which was much more convenient than calling. Upon arrival, they greeted me by name. It’s not fine dining, but definitely gives fine dining vibes through the quality of both the food and service. I strongly recommend and will absolutely return in the future.

One of, if not the best new restaurant in Denver! Every entree is so well thought out and out together. The presentation is really nice, but the flavors are mind-blowing. Everything we had was incredible. The service was on point, and the cocktails were delicious as well. Will be going back a lot more!

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience from beginning to end. Upon entering, I was immediately struck by the beautiful and well-designed ambiance of the restaurant. The General Manager greeted my friend and I with a warm, kind smile before seating us at the chef counter. We had a fantastic time watching the food preparation and drooling over each dish. Owen was fun to talk to and was very attentive. Without a doubt, this place offers the best fish I've had in Denver. Every dish was a burst of flavor. While everything was delicious, my favorites were the carne apache and the crudo. It's also worth mentioning how outstanding the beverage menu is—kudos to the beverage manager for the unique flavors that pair perfectly with the menu items. Thank you for making my night so special. I will definitely be back soon.

This is a special place. My husband and I worked on cruise ships in the early 90’s. One of the stops was Cozumel. There were these old hidden restaurants with stunning food. This food reminds of these places. The food is amazing. The feel is earthy and hip. Just fabulous!
