A little bummed out today. I’ve eaten at MomoYama dozens of times before and this is the first time I have experienced what I’ll call the “sake bait and switch”. Last night I requested a glass of dasai 23 sake, one of my favorites. In the past they have had this sake in stock and I usually pay around $24 for a glass. Last night they didn’t have it, and instead suggested another brand. They brought me a taste, and although not up to par with dasai 23, it was reasonable, so I ordered a glass. And I emphasize “glass”. The waiter brings the bottle and pours an overflowing glass, then says “I’ll just leave the bottle here with you”. I thought that was a bit odd, but I didn’t say anything. Later on he came by and asked if I would like a second glass, which I accepted. At the end of our meal the bill came, and it seemed higher than usual, but I paid it and left a 20% tip. I think the total was $212 for the two of us. Then the waiter comes back and asks if I would like to take the rest of the bottle home with me. I was totally perplexed by this as there was at least half a bottle left, and I only ordered two glasses. So I said “no thank you”. When I got home I looked at the bill again and saw that I had paid $34 a glass ($68 total), and this was for an inferior sake to what I had originally requested. No explanation was ever provided by the waiter suggesting that I would be buying a bottle, rather than two glasses. This, my fellow diners, has left a very bad taste in my mouth. So unfortunately it will be sayonara MomoYama.

The quality of the food was amazing, and the staff were friendly, professional and knowledgeable of the menu and had great recommendations. The restaurant was busy on New Years Eve resulting in a longer than normal wait time. I think it took about an hour to receive our last roll after ordering it. Our waiter ended up not charging us for that roll. The salmon and tuna sashimi was melt in your mouth quality. The Momo San roll was particularly good and would recommend it to anyone. The atmosphere was pleasant. The lighting was great, not too bright, not too dim. The location of the restaurant was nice as well, a short walk from a good selection of other bars. I would consider this a great date night spot.

This was our first time here. We were running late and concerned about reservations on New Year’s Eve. They were very accommodating. First impressions were: great seating accommodations that provide privacy for even large groups, very knowledgeable and pleasant servers who were unintrusive, but paid attention to our dining rhythm, excellent food, I’d rank them very high for what is available in Portland (Nimblefish & Masu) come to mind. Background music modern Japanese , and although a touch loud, I am certain they would have lowered it if we had asked. I give them an (A-) and going back for Omakase.

It took a solid 15 minutes or so before we were greeted, which isn't a big deal, but the Sushi bar was also a bit backed up, so it would have been nice to be able to at least get some drinks and starters going a bit quicker. That ends the complaints - service was overall exceptional. We got some fairly "standard" rolls, but even the rainbow roll that you can get just about anywhere was exceptional. They had monkfish liver on special with a yuzu sauce that was absolutely out of this world. There was also a jalapeno toro crispy rice nigiri special that was one of the best bites I've had all year - extremely unique flavors and a really fun party of textures. When I come back, I'll definitely explore some of the more unique options available - my party was a bit averse to branching out too much - even though they ended up *loving* the monkfish liver, our most "adventurous" pick. Seaweed salad and gomae were also top-notch. I had a "Scott Toddy" - probably the best hot toddy I've had (FYI: sweeter than usual). I'll probably pass on the house sake next time and spend the few extra bucks on something nicer. There was nothing wrong with it, and for $9 it'll do the job, but there's a reason you get 9oz for $9. I can't wait to come back.

As always, the fish was super fresh, including live scallops. A special request for Abalone from Kona was fulfilled. The Abalone prepared three ways, a stew, a stir fry, and as sashimi was absolutely marvelous. The blue crab hand rolls were outstanding along with the toro and salmon samplers! To top it off, the whiskey gelato, WOW!

Food and service were great. Haven’t been in the space since it was the old Sinju restaurant. They did a really good jog on the remodel
