We were seated in a great location for us (4 adults and an infant). Our waiter Bill was excellent: very attentive without being obnoxious (some are). Hot food came hot and cold food came cold: excellent attention to details. The only question I had (minor) was I was charged for two espressos when I ordered a double espresso. The menu said the added shot would be 1.50, not an additional $4.00. (As I said minor,)

This was an absolutely sublime experience. We were quite a bit early, and they graciously seated us at a lovely table for two. The food was creative, exceptionally fresh and beautifully plated. Our server expertly timed delivery of our appetizer, drinks and food. So, so grateful for her recommendations on wine…paired perfectly with the food. I can’t wait to come back to Monterey as it’s a lovely town, but eating at Montrio will be high on my list of reasons why.

My husband and I moved back to Monterey after being gone for 5 years. The restaurant is under new ownership for a few years. The pros: the food was delicious and our waitress (older women) was phenomenal! She was kind, funny, friendly, and took excellent care of us. The cons: when we walked into the restaurant we got several looks from straight faced bartender and front desk girl. We were left standing there for 5 minutes before they would talk to us and then it wasn’t kind. The front desk girl greeted by saying how many and it’s going to be a few minutes then walked away. My husband went to the bar and stood there for another 5 minutes before he was able to have the non-bust bartender acknowledge him. He said I’d like get get a couple glasses of wine while we waited and she said not allowed. He just walked away and she said nothing. Because the food and waitress were great we will give it one more try. When spending over $250 for 2 drinks and 2 dinners, they should treat their guests much better.

Hello, I am very sorry to hear about these issues you incurred. This the polar opposite of the hospitality we strive to provide. I will reach out privately to further address.

Our server was Conchetta and she made the evening wonderful. I was disappointed that after having a reservation we were seated at a table next to the kitchen… not a fan. There were other tables available. Our cocktails were ok but lemon drops didn’t have a sugared rim and were garnished either a large lemon wedge. Our party ordered the Montrio salad, French onion soup, lobster bisque, Caesar salad and seared scallops. Food was good. What made our evening perfect was our fabulous server! Thanks Conchetta!

This is a hard review to write because many of the things that bothered us would be unimportant or even plusses to other guests. Perfectly good meal, but we were expecting a more relaxed and elevated fine-dining experience. So you be the judge: The cocktail menu is creative (if a bit on the sweet side), the food was tasty, and the ambiance is pleasant. The service was... brisk? Many people love when the next course comes seconds after your last, but we are not those people. I got the chicken jidori, which was generously herbed; my partner got the pork chop, which was breaded with bacon (still don't know how they did that). In both cases, the dish was absolutely accurate to its menu description, so we think it might be on us that we didn't really enjoy either. We couldn't taste the main ingredient: the meat. Again, this may bother no one else. The wine was unenjoyable because (again, possibly unimportant to many) it was served so cold. (I thought my Pinot noir had come directly from the fridge). Whether or not you appreciate conveyor-belt delivery of courses, I think everyone would be annoyed by our waiter's incessant need to announce each dish by saying "Ta-da!" which he also did upon presentation of the bill, which like everything else, came seconds after the dessert plates were removed. He also would walk away while still talking to us, no doubt in an attempt to save precious second ticking by. I don't think the service was rushed so much as the result of trying to cater to impatient tourists. Also, there was a large party upstairs, so maybe the staff were trying to get us our meal as quickly as possible before the banquet crunch waylaid them? As for us, we're likely to return, but mostly because we usually stay at the Marriott next door, and Montrio is perfect for when you want better than the hotel restaurant but aren't so desperate as to get in the car and drive somewhere better.

Friendly, accommodating staff, waiter tried hard, excellent food (one of my favorite restaurants), but an over an hour wait between excellent salad and what turned out to be a marvelous cioppino entrée put a dark cloud on what could have been an outstanding dining experience. Hopefully, this was just an anomaly. Will be back in hopes of a better timed food preparation! Maybe by ordering a less complex entrée I’ll have a more normal dining experience. Finally, I will mention that they did wave their $25 corkage fee to make up for our inconvenience. A very classy thing to do.

Dear Perla, Thank you for your kind words about our staff and food—we truly appreciate your loyalty and are honored to be one of your favorite restaurants. We’re glad you enjoyed your meal, especially the cioppino, but we sincerely regret the long wait between courses. Your patience means a lot to us, and we understand how timing plays a crucial role in the overall dining experience. We hope your next visit reflects the smooth, well-paced service we strive for. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to welcoming you back soon. Best, Montrio Team

This was our first time to Montrio. The food was outstanding, with great creativity and flavor. The service was attentive, friendly, and efficient. The ambience was great as well. The only demerits were that the room temperature was a bit cool so I had to leave my jacket on during dinner. There was some confusion in a drink order but it was resolved on the spot. Overall, this is now one of our go-to places in Monterey, especially if we take in a show at the Golden State Theater.
