If you want to go to one fine dining establishment while in Honolulu, Mugen is it! An intimate, well designed dining room sets the tone. The service is friendly and very professional. Every dish that was served was perfect. This six course dining experience was exceptional. Try the foie gras sandwich...simply the best. All of the service staff and a visit from the chef made the visit a memorable evening. If Michelin ever starts reviewing Hawaii restaurants, Mugen would earn three stars!

Amazing food, small intimate location. You leave full but not stuffed and feel like you had a little bit of everything on the 6 course menu. I sent this place to all my local friends and plan to return next time we are on the island.

Expensive but well worth the experience. Smaller sized dining room so it's a more intimate setting. In-house sommelier was on-hand to recommend pairings. Will definitely go back to celebrate another special occasion!

We went here after getting married at the courthouse and from the moment we pulled up, the service was 10/10. Eduardo was our main server and had wonderful information and recommendations. He really made our time special. We tried essentially everything on the menu and it was easily one of the top meals we’ve ever had. The attention to detail, amazing local ingredients, and top care and service made us feel aloha. Can’t wait to go back for champagne and oysters at the bar soon! Mahalo Nui Mugen for a wonderful evening.

Was looking to for a place to have a special fine dining dinner and this went way above expectations. The service was amazing, Douglas was fantastic with wine recommendations, and you were not rushed between courses. The food was incredible and was definitely the highlight over our trip. Hope to go back when ever I make it to the island and try their Tea service too.

We made our first visit to Mugen, in the ESPACIO Hotel. I perused the wine list, and we started with a 2014 Le Corton, a red Burgundy from Beane. It was very dark ruby red with hints of cassis and some astringency from the residual tannins. Mugen offers a six-course tasting menu. The first course features 3 items: a glass of Taro Vichyssoise, a piece of charred octopus sitting on wasabi pesto, and a mini tart with ahi and Hamachi poke with a dollop of caviar on top. We chose the Wagyu Beef Tartare, Shima Aji, Maui Venison, Kona Kampachi, Lobster Risotto, and Marrunga Lamb. The tartare was served with potato pave. It was luscious and creamy though I thought it would have been better with toast points. The Kona Kampachi came with a fabulous cranberry ponzu sauce. The Shima Aji was a disappointment … I thought the skin of the aji was far too salty. The lobster was perfectly cooked and the Shimeji mushroom risotto was perfection. The venison was crusted with heart of palm and shallots … it was tender and so flavor rich, it didn’t need the black garlic blueberry gastrique. The lamb was served with quarters of charred Brussel Sprouts, Maui onion jam and a lavender jus. Like the venison, it was so tender. Dessert course: There were 3 to choose from; we chose the Chocolate & Chestnut and the Green Apple & Ginger Sorbet. The chocolate dish was a log of chocolate and a nest with chestnut atop a small serving of apple banana “foster”. The sorbet was served with a container of warmed mulled hibiscus. The sorbet was decorated with slices of Asian pear and halves of grapes. The finale was a plate of several cheeses. One was served like a cookie with cream filling, and pieces of pineapple cooked in sweetened mustard wine (mostarda) atop some creamed cheese was the other item. Two hours later, we left thoroughly sated and content … Service was attentive and gracious; the atmosphere was tranquil, and the food was fabulous. Highly recommended!
