Oma's Hideaway is a vibrant, maximalist restaurant inspired by the life and spirit of Chef Thomas Pisha Duffly's grandmother, Kiong Tien “Tina” Vandenberg. Her ability to adapt, to make the most out of limited resources, and to stay creative while projecting warmth and brightness is the guiding force behind Oma’s Hideaway.

Born during the pandemic as a pop-up in the Gado Gado parking lot, Oma’s became a permanent beacon of iridescent light in Portland’s Richmond neighborhood in 2021. The menu draws from Tina’s life story, taking influence from the craveable, soul-satisfying hawker food of Singapore and Malaysia and “turning up the volume” with exaggerated yet balanced flavors in Chef Tom’s signature style. Oma’s serves dinner accompanied by a seasonal list of hand-crafted cocktails and zero-proof drinks.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Thomas Pisha-Duffly

From the OpenTable editors: A disco-style dining room, whimsical sea-inspired wallpaper, and vintage 1970s lamps—Oma’s Hideaway is a maximalist escape from the acclaimed Gado Gado team. The standout Southeast Asian menu is a love letter to James Beard Award-nominated chef Thomas Pisha-Duffly’s grandmother and the region’s hawker fare. Start with fruity house jello shots topped with mango boba before digging into standouts like wonton mee (yellow noodles with pork belly) and salted egg yolk curry fries.

From the moment we walked in the door we were received with enthusiasm and were attended to incredibly well throughout the night. My girlfriend has an orange allergy and our server and bartender took great care to make sure she was taken care of. The bartender used a toothpick with a wooden orange on it to garnish my drink which was a total accident and was so silly and we all giggled about it throughout the night. The food was INCREDIBLE, the flavor profiles and combinations were unlike anything we’ve had. The quality of the ingredients was 10/10 and the food was definitely made with love. I’d come back anytime.

Really fantastic food and great service. Dishes are on the small side, but what they lack in size they make up in flavor.

A couple dishes were incredible, but the game hen and the pork were disappointing.

The drinks are very good but a bit on the pricier side for the amount that you are served. The food is amazing and we tried the Chinese broccoli, won tons, pork with noodles and pork with rice. All the dishes were savory. The best part is the kitchen will cater to your culinary needs. My wife is allergic to cilantro so they took special care to keep it out of the dishes we ordered. Excellent job. The waitstaff were friendly and quick. We will definitely make the trip from SW Portland back to Oma’s. Parking is a bit rough on a Saturday night so either take Uber or give yourself plenty of time to find a spot in a crowded neighborhood.

Eat here! And eat all the things! The food was delicious and the service was wonderful! Both Oma's Hideaway and their sister restaurant, Gado Gado, are wonderful places to eat.

Went to Oma’s for NYE Prime rib dinner experience. Overall the food was good, but what was really lacking was the staff/service. We came in through the front door and there was already a line, no one came over to address us and at least say hi or that they’d be with us shortly. Staff members would just look over and someone was sorting through glasses rather than even say anything to the horde of customers waiting. Not only that, the front door would also not stay closed and so cold air would constantly be flowing in. Members of our party were trying to close the door and the staff did not even care to do anything. I’ve been here before and the staffing was slightly better, so I was disappointed. It sucks because the NYE dinner was a prepaid experience, so felt like they did not care to provide good service due to this fact.

Amazing food and great staff! New Year’s Eve dinner. Prime rib was incredible, even for someone who isn’t a big beef fan. We’ll be back.
