Growing up in Italy, my family cooked at home and had the most extraordinary experiences with ingredients grown in our backyard, paired with the wines my chef/restaurateur stepfather would bring back from regions throughout Italy. I fell in love with food as a child watching my stepfather, once nominated a top chef in Italy, work in restaurant kitchens and floors. Moving to California in 1991 and subsequently to Santa Monica and experiencing the Farmers Market inspired me to start Orto - Italian for “vegetable garden” - where I meld local ingredients and organic herbs grown here at the restaurant to create traditional Italian recipes. At our bar you’ll find a cocktail list created from fresh herbs and premium spirits, and our wine list focuses on sustainable and organic producers. Andrea Inio

The food and service was excellent! The portions were perfect to share, or enough for one hungry. The lychee blossom drink was so good! No valet, but ample street parking or a garage past SMB and 5th. My daughter left her purse, they safeguarded it until we drove back.

Had a delicious birthday lunch for two at this charming Santa Monica Italian restaurant. We had a starter of pasta with garlic and olive oil (aglio e olio) that included broccolini and cherry tomatoes that the waiter recommended when we didn't see a vegetable-forward pasta on the menu. Our main dish was perfectly cooked branzino steamed in a banana leaf. The place is intimate and charming, with lots of natural light. It has a second floor with a private dining area. I highly recommend.

Third visit in six months. Continues to delight and please.Cost is at the very top of my budget but Orto is fixed as a special occasion restaurant.

The food was amazing, and the service was good. The only complain I had was that the food came out quite slow. Because the restaurant wasn’t busy at the time, I would have expected the food to come out a bit faster, particularly during lunch hour when people have to go back to work. Overall though, it was a good experience.

Celebrating my son's birthday was a memorable experience at Orto! The staff was most attentive, food outstanding and I felt transformed to Italy in the lovely setting! This is a great restaurant!!!!
