Winner of the UK's Best Independent Restaurant of the Year, 2014. Pat 'Pops' Newland has been serving authentic British fish and chips in London since 1945, and from this he has recreated a restaurant serving one of Britain's best-loved dishes in a friendly setting, surrounded by authentic 1940s/50s memorabilia lovingly curated by Pops himself. Our menu includes sustainably-caught mouth-watering fresh fish cooked in crunchy batter, served with golden chips and classic mushy peas, prepared on the premises by our onsite fishmonger. You can also try the seafood platter, pies, chicken, or traditional east end classics like jellied eels, followed by traditional, indulgent English desserts such as sticky toffee pudding and apple pie. Drinks vary from fruit juices and traditional ginger ale, to carefully-picked wines and locally-sourced beers.

The staff were very attentive and perfectly pleasant the whole time, greeted us on arrival and asked whose birthday it was after I had made I note on our booking. The food and the drinks were all delicious and the price was great value for the quality. After we had finished they supplied us with a gorgeous complimentary sticky toffee pudding with custard and a candle while singing happy birthday to my partner. All very sweet and certainly appreciated. Thank you

Advertised as a traditional fish and chips restaurant but it wasn’t even close. Couldn’t eat the chips as they were not fresh and too hard/crispy. Calamari was rubbery and hard on the edges, couldn’t cut it with a knife. Some of it only half battered. So disappointing as didn’t want to waste money and I’m not normally a fussy eater, but literally couldn’t eat it! Massive plates but tiny portion and definitely over-priced. One waitress had a poor attitude, rude in tone, almost like she was annoyed we were there. Man came to adjust the seating directly behind us and I got a chair shoved into my elbow whilst I was eating. Then they seated a huge family right behind us, one guy had his face at my shoulder, when I turned to look at what was going on, which made me feel so uncomfortable. We went to move tables for a little personal space but the waitress stopped us. Then she took the milk away for the teapot so we had to ask for it back. The toilets/bathrooms were dirty and down a steep set of stairs and into a back area which felt uncomfortable going down there alone. We ate what we could in about 10 minutes and then paid at the table and left. Once we crossed over, one of the waiters followed us and told us we hadn’t paid, whilst we were on the street, surrounded by people. I immediately grabbed my receipt and showed him the £50 we had just spent there and told him we definitely have paid. He didn’t apologise, he just looked awkward and shrugged and walked off. So glad I asked for a receipt as am now wondering if that was some sort of scam, considering the awful experience we had there. I definitely wouldn’t go there again and would recommend you take your money elsewhere! And if you want traditional fish and chips - head to the seaside!

Traditional fish and chips restaurant. On this occasion, we found that the portions were on the small side. The service was very good.

Not sure why they pretend to be on open table when the waitlist is completely disregarded. Such customer service is a pathetic joke.

The fries were just ok. The fish was dry and if the starter sauce came in any smaller container. It just wasn’t the fantastic experience I was expecting.

Booked table for 2 for my Birthday. Was seated on a corner where staff were passing constantly. They offered seat were waiting customers would be continually passing or standing over us. Moved finally to a table that was more agreeable. Service time was fine but was served regular coke rather than diet coke. Chips were fine but not outstanding. Chicken was edible but not what I expected for rotisserie chicken no real flavour or colour to it. Wasn't given the choice of thigh or breast quarter. Gravy came in a bowl not a boat so it cooled quickly being in a bowl and having to spoon it on my plate. No notice taken considering I stated it was my birthday celebration on the reservation. The staff were friendly.

Everything's good, but it's just a little too expensive for fish and chips.
