  • WAKA Takeover At PUMA

    Apr 1, 2025 only
Baobab Fare changed the way Detroit eats four years ago when it introduced the city to the warmth and depth of East African cooking. Then came Waka, a spinoff food truck bringing East African street food to the avenues of the Motor City. Soon, Waka will take its next step with a brick-and-mortar of its own in Eastern Market — but before the doors open, here’s a chance to try what’s coming. For one night only, Waka is firing up Puma’s wood fire for an exclusive takeover preview of the new restaurant. Guests will be among the first to try new menu items, like brochettes — flame-kissed skewers of spiced lamb and chicken — alongside Waka’s already beloved chapati. Hamissi Mamba and Nadia Nijimbere arrived in Detroit as refugees from Burundi and built Baobab Fare to share the flavors of home. Since opening in 2021, Baobab Fare has earned national acclaim. Esquire and Eater named it one of the best restaurants in the country, and Mamba and Nadia have been recognized as four-time James Beard Award semifinalists, reaching the finalist round for Outstanding Restaurateur last year and earning a 2024 semifinalist spot for Outstanding Hospitality. Mamba also won Food Network’s Chopped, but for him and Nadia, the greatest reward is the community they’ve built around their food.

The food was really good, we had the ceviche and provoleta (more chimicurri pls) as appetizers. Both were delicious. The cocktails were refreshing and airy. We tried the “diablada” and the “pumarita” which were both tasty! The choripan with pickled cabbage was delectable and the chivito was also very good! Definitely interested in going back again and would recommend!

Friendly fun staff. Outstanding food done in the Argentinian style. Great Detroit vibe. Loved the dj. Not a place for quiet conversation but we really enjoyed the music. That trout and those peppers! Amazing.

10 out of 10. From the welcoming urban aesthetic to the most inviting wait staff to the butterflied trout. Impressed I am!

I came in with an open mind to celebrate by 24 year old twin’s birthday. I knew of the limited menu items but we thought we will give it a try. Unfortunately 75% of the menu items is deep fried. The only grilled items was the trout. Health wise/calories there is no escape from 1000+ calories. Bottoms line not my kind of food but of course the taste is always good when fried. Price is on the very high side as well. The fried chicken entree was $30 for two pieces and no condiments. You can get the point on price.

The food is excellent, the vibe is fun, and the servers are engaging. I’m not sure if the service timing is intentionally avant-garde, but it took 15 minutes to be greeted and the timing from then on was more like a jazz solo than traditional service.

One of a kind experience in Detroit. Personal standouts are the fully dressed Choripan and Dulce de leche ice cream with rum!
