James Beard-nominated Mexico-forward restaurant recontextualizing Mexican cuisine and culture through Storytelling.

We kindly require all guests to disclose all dietary restrictions and allergies prior to their reservation. We are unable to accommodate allergies to nightshades, chile, corn, or allium. Additionally we are not a gluten free kitchen and are unable to provide nut and seed free diners.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Dani Morales

From the OpenTable editors: República has been a critical darling since it opened in 2020, garnering raves from Bon Appétit, Eater Portland, and more. Sit in the sleek and intimate dining room to dine on chef Jose Camarena’s ambitious, Mexican-forward dishes—think seared, tobiko-topped scallops in a foie-infused masa “cone”—accompanied by personal anecdotes and historical details about dishes from attentive servers. An excellent Mexican-leaning drinks program rounds out the singular experience.

Andrés was so awesome and knowledgeable. They went above and beyond to make sure we were happy with our experience. I can’t rave enough about how delicious everything was, especially as primarily dining vegan. Our favorite was the mushroom mole, it was so spicy and sooo outstanding!

Positives: everyone was nice. Cocktail was great. Short ribs were good. Negatives: staff trying to do too much with the price fix meal and the à la carte menu. Slow service. Quesadilla was grey - very off putting. Didn’t taste good either. Plating is very boring. Soup was “eh”. Seems like you’re trying to do something but it’s not hitting the mark.

The drinks and dishes are original and interesting and fresh. Also, for you gluten free folks, most of their dishes are corn-based rather than flour, and anything can be made gluten free, and vegetarian and vegan.

We had an amazing meal from the a la carte menu. Service was impeccable and the restaurant space was elegant and quiet enough for conversations without shouting. All and all a great night out!

Just tried their $130 tasting menu... and wow, what a letdown. Basically the whole meal was corn and tortillas in every possible form—purees, crisps, masa everything. Looked pretty, but got super repetitive fast. Almost no real protein to speak of—just tiny bits here and there. We left hungry and kinda annoyed. Service was fine, vibe was fine, but for that price? Nah. Felt stingy and one-note. Wouldn't go back. 1/5 — pretty to look at, disappointing to eat.

We had an absolutely amazing dinner. The food was next level delicious, the staff was lovely and accomodating, cannot recommend this place enough. We’ve eaten at a lot of great restaurants in/around Portland, this was easily top 5.

We came here for our 11-year anniversary and had an incredible experience. We don’t typically do high-end dining because it can feel pretentious, but this was welcoming, comfortable, and truly special. The food introduced us to Mexican cuisine in a way we had never experienced before. Thank you for such a memorable night. We can’t wait to return.

FAQs

The ambience is intimate, polished and warm, a relaxed, sophisticated dining room with thoughtful lighting and an inviting staff presence. Guests describe a ‘quiet sexy’ sophistication, storytelling service, and a space that feels both elevated and welcoming, perfect for special nights or focused tasting experiences.

Smart casual is the dress code. Guests regularly dress up for special occasions like anniversaries and birthdays, but the overall vibe is polished and comfortable rather than overly formal.

Yes, República accepts private parties and can host larger groups. Guests and the owner information indicate private-party options; contact the restaurant directly to discuss capacities, menu options, and special arrangements for events.

For a quieter, more intimate experience pick a midweek night (Wednesday or Thursday) or an early seating. If you’re celebrating or prefer a lively atmosphere, Friday or Saturday evenings are great choices. Because the restaurant runs tasting menus, any night you visit will be curated and memorable, just book ahead.

Family-friendly for older kids and celebrations, yes. Guests often bring teens and celebrate birthdays or anniversaries, and the team regularly accommodates special occasions and larger parties. Physical accessibility details aren’t listed publicly, so call the restaurant ahead to discuss seating needs or mobility accommodations.

For a quieter, more intimate experience choose an earlier seating (many guests enjoyed 5:30 pm reservations) or a midweek night. If you want the full celebratory energy, weekend evenings are lively and popular. Because the tasting menu is paced and seatings are limited, reserve in advance for your preferred time.

Busiest: weekend evenings and special-occasion nights when tasting menus and pairings are popular. Quietest: earlier seatings (around opening at 5:00–5:30 pm) and midweek nights tend to feel more relaxed; several guests reported very quiet early dinners and more lively weekend bookings.

Yes, República is a fantastic choice for date night. Guests frequently describe the space as intimate, sophisticated and warm, and the tasting menus (7–10 courses) with story-driven presentations make it a special-occasion experience. Expect attentive service, thoughtful wine and cocktail pairings, and a relaxed yet elegant Pearl District atmosphere. Reserve in advance and consider the tasting or paired-drinks option for a memorable evening.

Yes, the restaurant asks all guests to disclose dietary restrictions and allergies before their reservation. They can accommodate many needs but cannot handle allergies to nightshades, chile, corn, or allium; they are not a gluten-free kitchen and cannot guarantee nut- and seed-free service. Guests have reported the team is helpful in handling certain intolerances when notified in advance.

Families do dine here, and guests often bring teens or celebrate birthdays with children. The focus is on tasting menus and storytelling, so there isn’t a kids menu; younger children may find the pacing and portioning challenging. If you’re bringing kids, consider an early seating or a private-party booking and call ahead to discuss menu flexibility.
