Restaurant Claudine, Carpenter Carpenter’s third establishment, resides in a remodeled home in the up-and-coming Government Hill neighborhood. The space offers snug tables surrounded by elegant hand-painted wallpaper, vintage chandeliers, and sentimental pictures of our namesake, Houston Carpenter’s grandmother, Claudine.

We now offer lunch and dinner Tuesday-Sunday, with Tea Time on Saturday and Sunday morning's. Restaurant Claudine has recently launched a new menu that features New American cuisine for both lunch and dinner.

Recently went in specifically for their tea service. When we made the reservation it was not clear that to book the tea service, customers needed to book under the experience tab, not the general reservation system. We were told since we did not book the tea service IN ADVANCE we could not order the tea option because the pastry chef only makes enough food for the number of reservations received IN ADVANCE. When I looked at the reservation system I noticed they had open reservations for the tea service for the rest of the day so I booked a second reservation and was provided with a tower of food and tea. Not sure how the pastry chef only makes enough food for the reservations received IN ADVANCE but they take reservations for the tea service up until closing, after the pastry chef has left. The table of four next to us also didn’t know to book under the experience tab and the manager and server noted that this misunderstanding was a continual problem. Long story short but if you want the tea service make sure to click on the experience tab and not the general reservation system.

Several groups of friends recommended Restaurant Claudine and said it was their new favorite place to dine. We went in anticipation of how well they described their experience. We didn't have the greatest experience, but given several groups went on different nights/times, we believe our experience was a one off.

Booked an OpenTable experience for Sunday TeaTime when I booked the experience, it was $30 per person ( a price already steep, but we understood that we were paying for the experience). Our server, a young woman, disappeared multiple times during our reservation. Upon greeting us, she seemed annoyed that we did not plan on ordering from the a la carte menu. We were given our tea pots 15 minutes after selecting our teas, but didn’t receive tea cups for another 10 minutes. The male host with curly hair seemed to be more attentive to our table than our actual server. Food was less than mediocre and had obviously been sitting out, re-refrigerated, and served to us cold. Everything on our 3-tiered platter was ice cold : sandwiches, macaroons, and store bought brownies. Even Betty Crocker would have been better than what we were served. All items were obviously pre-prepared, so why did it take nearly 40 minutes after arriving for this food to hit the table? The final straw came after we flagged down a server that was not ours, asking for the bill. Our server never came, instead The male host gave us the check and stood table side waiting for us to present payment. We had planned to split the bill, and were shocked to see that we were charged $40 each for Tea Time. I mentioned this to the host, who proceeded to argue with us about the price. I showed him our OpenTable experience, which gave us a subtotal of $120 for 4 people, NOT $160. He claimed that the a la carte menu had the pricing of Tea Time at $40 per person, but we did not order off the a la carte menu. The tea time menu is completely separate and did not have a price displayed. The host refused to grab our server and claimed that the manager was unavailable. Completely dismayed, we paid, waited another 15 minutes to receive our card back and left immediately. This experience was terrible! We will never be back and will let everyone know how shady and inhospitable this establishment was.

Reservation claims a 90 min dining limit. However, be prepared to be there longer. Slow service. 45 mins to make a sandwich that was not good. Spend this kind of money elsewhere.

Food was outstanding. Our server was darling. The only problem was there were 6 of us. When the bill came, instead of stating that there was a gratuity charge of 20% for a group of 6, the bill stated charge $$. This would imply that a tip was still warranted. We had as we always do leave a tip (usually if food & service is over & above, we leave a generous tip). When booking a reservation, we simply should be informed of a 20% charged for a group of 6 or larger. We will return as the food was fabulous!

The portions were on the Restaurant Week menu were disappointingly small. However, the food was tasty, the ambience wonderful, and the service was excellent. My wife's MSG allergy was noted and accommodated. They don't use MSG at all. Overall, quite enjoyable. First-time visit, but I'd come back.

It feels like this place is still figuring out its culinary direction. The menu is limited, so I expected every dish to stand out, but the sandwiches were just okay. The shoestring fries didn’t seem fresh—they were hard and tasted of oil. That said, we went during happy hour, and for $9, I can’t complain too much. The real standout was an off-menu dish: chicken-fried chicken over mashed potatoes—absolutely delicious. The popovers were decent, but the butter tasted plain rather than raspberry-infused. The spaghetti was decent as well—more meat than noodles, which felt a bit off for a traditional spaghetti dish, but maybe that’s their take on Southern spaghetti. Cocktails were a solid 8/10, and the tea was fantastic. With a few tweaks, this place could really shine, and I’d definitely come back.
