Riva in Helensburgh is one of the finest Italian and Mediterranean restaurants in town. On West Clyde Street, the Riva dining space is stylish and comfortable which, in a way, reflects the food: traditional, wholesome recipes prepared and presented in a contemporary way. From both the Riva lunch menu and the a la carte, expect pizza, pasta, meat and fish, with each dish featuring only the freshest produce that’s local where possible or imported from Italy. Riva is just around the corner from Helensburgh main train station, meaning it’s pretty easy to get to from wherever you’re based in this glorious part of Scotland. Reservations are essential.

We knew this establishment as a “Navy Pub” which tended to be somewhat raucous. It’s certainly not now! There was an interesting menu with some less common items like Osso Bucco. Our table was close to another with eight or so ‘ladies of around 40’ having a raucous party but fortunately they moved on soon. Our food was delicious but the choice was restricted by several things being “sold out” - and this was only about 18.30. The hen party perhaps? The staff were really excellent and our bill was adjusted a bit to compensate for unavailable items. Overall it was quite a bit better than we initially expected and we will go back in future.

We had a lovely meal and the people were lovely and friendly, we came up from Cheshire for a couple of days break

It was good apart from the noise from the DJ who ramped up the noise at 9. Did they forget people were still eating, couldn't carry on a conversation.

Had a lovely pre Christmas catchup with friends. Lovely cosy atmosphere and comfortable seating. Food was very good and great value for money. Servers were attentive but didn't disturb us. Overall a very pleasant visit.

Came in for drinks had the table booked and was met with 2 confused members of staff were clearly done for the night. I explained we had a booking and was told they werent expecting us and had cashed up, so we left (as we didn't really have an option). About 5/10 minutes later they appeared in the pub we ended up in, showing they clearly just wanted out of their work to go out. Disappointed as a friend had travelled from Perth for this night.

We have been to Riva many times, however, this was by far the worst service ever. We were shown to our table and given some menus. After 15 mins we had to ask for someone to take our food and drinks order. Food and drinks were fine (although despite asking for some tap water and three glasses, I had to go up to the bar to ask for this as this was not brought to the table with the drinks). No one approached to ask if everything was alright during the meal or asked if we needed more drinks. We had to then ask if we could view the dessert and cocktails menu. When this was provided, we then had to approach them to take our order. The restaurant was not very busy with only a couple of tables occupied. It was however a sunny day and they have half a dozen or so tables outside for alcohol drinkers - they were getting all of the service! There was ample staff working that day - they just didn't see the three "invisible' people who were having a meal.
