Shanghai 1814 is an exceptional destination restaurant in an iconic listed building in the heart of Southampton. You won’t have experienced anything quite like it. This is where East meets West in a cacophony of flavour, style, colour and vibrancy. Shanghai 1814 is so-called as the owner’s ancestors opened their first restaurant in Shanghai in 1814 – the time of the Qing Dynasty, China’s final imperial dynasty.

This combination of traditional European architecture with exuberant Chinese interior design is dynamic and exciting. Welcome to Shanghai 1814 and enjoy the ultimate dining experience.

Wow-factor interiors are decadent and glamorous, draped in dazzling chandeliers and adorned with cherry blossom. The menus feature contemporary Chinese dishes that are fresh and flavoursome, created by a Chef who previously worked at Michelin-starred Hakkasan in London’s Mayfair.

Beautiful setting, felt important being shown to our seat and serviette placed in your laps, food then was excellent but felt very very rushed and offered a drink once, and was rushed through our starter and main meal …. Main meal could have been hotter and the don’t forget to add the service charge of 12.5% to your bill ! ! !

Very disappointing. We have been here several times previously booked a table for my husband birthday for 2 o’clock. We ordered wine which never came and had to ask the waitress who forgot. After the starters they asked if they could come out with mains as the kitchen is closing. At this point it went down hill they cleared around us but never cleared our table in the end I had to get someone to clear our table. We did complain at this point as I added to the booking that this was for a birthday. A slice of cake out afterwards but all too late. They then charged a service charge. Do not book a table at 2 as they are to interested in closing the restaurant.

This restaurant is extremely good. We have eaten here several times and cannot fault the food, ambiance or the service standard. The only focus would be the cost being at the upper end, but you get what you pay for. We would recommend to others for a memorable evening out.

Excellent location. High standard from the moment we got in the restaurant. Food quality was great. We will come back definitely.

The starter was fine and noodles etc but the main course Kung Pao should have been spicy but wasn’t and it is a shame as I love spicy food so this was bland.
