We're NYers but haven't been to this restaurant since the early '90s. Not going back. While our server was kind--even giving us our desserts for free for my husband's birthday!--the rest of the service was rude, our seating was substandard, the clientele was dressed in tee shirts and hoodies, and the upstairs room was unattractive and so loud we couldn't hold a conversation with our family. The steak was fine but I can get the same steak at so many other places. We won't be coming back or recommending this establishment -- too bad the old NYC standard steak house has devolved into...meh.

We got sat outside (covered, heated; unfortunately not well sealed) in a completely empty vestibule. Our server came a couple mins after us being sat. he immediately placed the Wollensky Grill menus in front of us. He was curt in his response to my asking "is there a cocktail menu" and when I asked for the wine list he pointed me to the back of the Wollensky Grill menu. His response when I asked for wines by the bottle menu was "oh do you want to see the big restaurant list?" Obviously, we did. We wanted to experience S&W, not a regular midtown cafe with uninterested service. Not sure what these decisions on our service were based on, but we did not feel the "legendary service" that is talked about on the S&W website. The food was OK. The service was mediocre at best. It was too cold to sit outside, which is unfortunate because the weather had been great just hours earlier. We made reservations to attend a legendary NYC steakhouse with allegedly stellar service and we experienced a mediocre and unnecessarily expensive dinner for two that left way too much to be desired. Would not go back.
