We ordered the Oysters (delicious), MacNCheese, Brussels Sprouts(our favorite), Black Goddess salad(2nd favorite), Collard Lasagna, Somerville Burger( Least fav due to sandwich spread, took away from the waygu),Mighty River, Espresso Martini cocktails and a Chocolate ganche dessert with cappuccinos. The ambience was awesome, low lights and intimate setting. Flawless and time era centered decor set the tone. All in all, we enjoyed ourselves and the food, enviroment and people. I'd give 4.5 out of 5 for the sandwich spread and still waiting about 15 minutes after scheduled 8pm reservations to be seated. However, they offered us tea and didn't make us wait outside, so I appreciated that. Also they had dedicated staff checking on every section but not in an overbearing way but anticipatory. Service was great and I can't wait to check them out in 2months or so to see the improvements. I think they have more than enough potential to be a grand staple.

Fantastic food, ambience and service. Music was great and the best part was we could hear each other and did not have to shout across the table. Hope you are thinking of extending to brunch on the weekends once you are established We will be back either way

I had an absolutely fantastic experience at Somerville. From the moment my friends and I walked in, the atmosphere was warm and inviting. The staff was friendly and attentive, making sure we were comfortable throughout our meal. We started with the Parker House Rolls and Fried Chicken and Caviar Sliders which was a perfect balance of flavors and beautifully presented. For the main course, we had the wagyu strip lion, braised bacon, baked mac and cheese, fingerling potatoes, mashed potatoes, Brussel sprouts and the pan seared ora king salmon in which we all shared and it was out of this world. The flavors, textures, or ingredients were perfectly executed, and the portion size was generous without feeling overwhelming. I couldn’t resist trying the manjari torte to finish off the meal, and I’m so glad we did—it was the perfect sweet ending. The drinks were also top-notch. My friends had the mighty river and the a love supreme and it paired wonderfully with the food. You can really tell that the chefs and staff care about the entire dining experience. Overall, Somerville is a must-visit if you're in the area. The food, service, and ambiance all come together for an unforgettable experience. Can’t wait to return!

What a beautiful experience. I am grateful to have made a reservation early and most definitely see why this place is booked solid u til after March. It is everything I imagined it would be and more! Service was outstanding! From the moment we walked to the front door, to being seated and our server Akil was phenomenal. The place is gorgeous, ambient and very aesthetically pleasing. The lighting, the walls, the bathroom, everything! This is the type of establishment I would love to frequent often. The food… out of this works! Get the Parker Rolls and try the Collard Lasagna! My goodness, being a Los Angeles native, a big researcher and fan of the early Los Angeles lifestyle and Black Vintage Hollywood, this place was spot on and highlighted and represented an era very well. I am grateful and hope to be back soon! Make your reservations people. Big ups to the minds that brought this place to life! Best, Shannon Marie

Last night I took my wife out to celebrate her upcoming birthday with two of our friends, so we headed to Somerville (Issa Rae’s new restaurant) in the neighborhood I was born and raised and still call home… Windsor Hills. From the moment I stepped into the spot… I now know what it must have been like to be in the Cotton Club in Harlem, or the lounge of the Dunbar Hotel which if you don’t know was originally known as the “HOTEL SOMERVILLE”! The Dunbar aka “Somerville” built by John Somerville was a place all the Jazz greats, and other African Americans could stay while in Los Angeles. Moving back to the restaurant, the hostess was great and being on Slauson Ave, on a Friday night it was great to walk up and being able to head to the bar while our table was being prepared. The bar is a beautify site to see, and we waited a while for drinks. As I was enjoying the vibes, talking with everyone (you know me), meeting new people… I couldn’t help but think at some point Bumpy Johnson was going to come through those doors to come relax and hear the cool live jazz playing that echoed throughout the restaurant. The whole vibe is that of a lounge style seating, an even when seated our table had that plush style seating and no matter where you are seated, you still get a complete view of the converted bank, now transformed into a Harlem renaissance style joint where “black folks” can come and celebrate (footnote the crowd and staff is a mixture of all the rich ethnic cultures where have in Los Angeles). The menu offers some great choices… we went with the MUST HAVE Collard Green Lasagna, Mary’s Organic Roasted Chicken, Halibut, Pan Seared Ora King Salmon, and the Lobster Mac and Cheese. Our wait staff was great, and enjoy your bread & butter (think Kings Hawaiian bread style) and great conversation, because it takes a minute for your food to come (like when someone tells you “I’m on my way be ready… and 30 mins later they still not there lol). Everything from the food pre

From the moment you walk in you are struck by the overall vibe. An amazing trio of piano, tumpet and stand up bass are grooving at the perfect level. The decor...the lighting, the seating, the way the room focuses you in done with clear intention and done well. We ordered a lot of things to share and not a one was a miss. Lamb shank, mary's chicken, collar green lasagna....duck confit, mac and cheese, those chicken and caviar sliders are quite literally unanimously the best chicken sandwich any of had ever had. We already made a reservation to come back. Also, they really spent the time to come and check in on us during and after in a non obtrusive way. Really wanted feedback and appreciated the couple things we mentioned we thought might be helpful. They're doing thigs right to me and like I said...we're on the books to return!
