Welcome to The Sondes Arms

The Sondes Arms, Rockingham, is a 16th Century coaching inn, with amazing views of Rockingham Castle and Church. Having recently undergone a full refurbishment, The Sondes Arms offers a delightful Bar and Restaurant ideal for every occasion.

We pride ourselves as a family friendly public house & serve a traditional pub menu of home cooked food. In addition we serve our beautiful home cooked carvery all day Sunday and now Wednesday and Friday evenings along with a great range of lagers, ales and wines

Staff and food lovely, took a while for food to arrive. Didn’t like siting in the bar where a woman on another table quite brazenly joined in our private conversation. Not the restaurants fault but it marred the evening. Didn’t like walking past all the other diners to even book in

Booked in solo prior to a local event so was given a nice quiet corner and music turned down at my request. Superb fish and chips, the fish was lovely and fresh, followed by ice cream and a ginger beer. My ideal! Love the building, staff very nice, what’s not to like. Thank you

Fantastic meal today. Took my mom out for early Mother's Day meal. 3 meat carveries and one vegetarian meal. All the food was fantastic, the gammon in particular was tasty and succulent. As always an exceptional variety of veg and sauces. Can't wait to go back. Was busy so would definitely recommend booking to avoid disappointment.

Unfortunately even after we pre ordered the food was very slow to come out and one meal was missed altogether! Disappointed by the service

The booking form asked if the meal was for a celebration so I said birthday. It was my granddaugher's 6th. Why did they ask as no mention was made of it and nothing special, not even a balloon. Meal was good except the roasties were too hard to cut up. We sat for quite a while with the food counter empty until we were told we could go up, by which time a queue had formed. I think their systems need an overhaul.

Despite it being relatively quiet the service was painfully slow. Probably low on staff. We ordered from the starter menu Mushrooms & 2 x Brixwotth Pate with toast & onion chutney. Mushrooms were ok. When Pate was brought to the table we were told they’d run out of chutney. No alternative offered. The Pate was NOT local Boxworth but a normal Brussels style slab. Mains we ordered Gammon, Steak Pie & Lasagna Lasagna was ok albeit small portion. Gammon came without advertised crispy onions and Steak pie, came with chips not advertised mash and I had to request gravy otherwise it would have been extremely dry.

Booked for 6.30 didn’t get to go to carvery until 7.15 , totally unacceptable, the restaurant was freezing at the bottom end of the pub which I did highlight on paying bill , not an enjoyable experience, food was mediocre, roasties were over cooked some like rocks , Yorkshire a bit tough , I’d give an overall 6/10 , staff were fine no issues there tbf first time I’ve seen sweetcorn on a carvery , not sure about that one ,

We have visited sondes arms many a time before and have always loved the food, the atmosphere and generally everything about the experience. Due to having not been for a while we decided to go for a birthday on 23/02/2025. We booked well in advance and we were very looking forward to it. I’m really sad to say that from start to finish it was a very stressful, and pointless booking. We arrived on time and were seated, in a very noisy section of the restaurant. Served quite quickly to start off with. However once we received our starters and drinks we were advised we would have to wait to be called up for a carvery (this wasn’t an issue as stated we had visited before) starters were finished, and collected and we were left sitting for over an hour before having to ask a server if we were at all close to getting our food. We were advised a minute and then rushed off to get our meals. Due to having kids at the table we had to take turns and this meant 6/7 of us had been rushed up to get food while one stayed with the kids. When we got back to the table the waitress then advised a large party they could go up. Meaning our slot was over and the last person in our party had to wait behind everyone else and ended up sitting down to her food while everyone else had nearly finished theirs. The food was very poor, majority of it looked as though it was frozen and reheated, most of it was stone cold. Out of a party of 7 only 3/4 of us actually ate the meal and the rest of us just left it. We then very quickly paid and left. Service is very rushed, the ambiance is extremely loud and the food quality was very poor for the amount that was paid. Such a shame for what was once a very very nice restaurant renowned for its carvery’s.
