To enjoy the full Song Bird experience, diners have the option of enhancing their menu by adding chef’s Menu Supplements. I expected a wonderful dinner and was not disappointed. Food was amazing, staff just delightful and ambience awesome. We had the Chinese NY banquet and each course was divine. It was our 24th wedding anniversary and the staff gave us a great table, lots of congratulations and a lovely cupcake to finish the meal with. Anything Neil Perry does is fantastic and this includes Songbird- do yourself a favour and go for Chinese NY

We were excited for Neil Perry’s return to Cantonese cuisine at Songbird. Our lunch started well with decent dumplings including an exceptional dumplings of Pearl Perch and an excellent prawn toast. However the larger dishes were strikingly inconsistent, with many being really sub par. The skin of our crispy Sun Farm chicken was soggy while the meat lacked taste - Songbird’s version of Cantonese crispy chicken is worse than any recent version we have encountered in budget suburban Chinese restaurants. The soy sauce noodles were greasy and had a hard inedible texture like reheated takeout noodles. The garlic sauce drowning a plate of choy sum and mushrooms was a brown gloopy tasteless mess. One highlight was the superb steamed coral trout - the superbly fresh fish was steamed to perfection. While there were many wait staff, our waiter was unfriendly, inattentive and lacked knowledge.

Perry might do better than this. Really ordinary fare. Eggplant devoid of flavour Evan allowing for Cantonese approach. Great lobster spring rolls. Fatty Peking duck - Mr Perry go to siji minfu please. Crisp sun farm chicken was NOT Somerlad Mediocrity meets double bay. Ha ha.

The food was exceptional but coming from a part of the inner west where Asian food is very good it was not significantly different but without a doubt the whole dining experience at songbird rated highly and the menu was fantastic . The staff were polite and pleasant and service excellent. We will return.

Very underwhelming. Recommendation: come here for the duck and that’s it. Very obviously an Australian attempt at Cantonese cuisine, and not in a good way. Peking duck was exceptional but everything else was lacklustre to say the least. Missing the “wok hei” that makes Cantonese fried dishes so delicious. The blends of spices were just imbalanced and wrong; reminded us of the old Spice Temple, which was essentially just copious amounts of chilli oil and not much else. Even the tea was pathetically Australian: under brewed, expensive, and pretty average flavour. Just an insult to easily accessible, economical, flavourful Chinese teas. The price was also simply unacceptable for the serving size and quality. All ingredients were as fresh as it gets but to charge these prices for dishes that pale in comparison to those at a nice yum cha (which are substantially cheaper) is quite ridiculous. Unfortunately, had very high hopes for this restaurant and was let down by everything except the duck. Won’t be back.
