A bold new brasserie sits atop The Oaklander Hotel and overlooks one of Pittsburgh’s most iconic neighborhoods, Spirits & Tales is designed for those with the desire gather around the table. Rooted in the spirit of the original brasserie, it reimagines classic French all-day plates and beloved dishes with inspired veg, locally sourced meats, and expertly prepared seafood. The real value here is a very pleasant and quiet setting for a business lunch, and fantastic view! Menu is simple with good options for all dietary needs. Pricing a little high, though expected in a hotel bistro.

Our server was great, however the entrees we received were both severely overcooked. I ordered the NY Strip medium rare, and it came out nearly well-done. My husband ordered the pork chop, and that came out also very overcooked (we didn’t say anything because 1. That’s not my style and 2. There were closing at 10 for NYE and I didn’t want a steak to be remade that close to closing). The brussel sprouts that came with the pork chop were also a little lack-luster and appeared to just be boiled.. Our drinks were great, I just had the red blend and my husband had the Comfortably Numb. Could be a great place with a great atmosphere if more attention was paid to the food!

Staff seemed annoyed - there was no bartender working so drinks were limited- food was okay but expensive.

Disappointed by this dining experience despite having had lovely brunches here. They seemed understaffed and servers were stretched between a large party in an event space and the restaurant. Our scallops were burnt and overcooked as was the short rib. The food took almost an hour to come out. I had also stated through my reservation that we were celebrating a birthday and there was no acknowledgment. We tried to order dessert but they were out of our choice. This was a Monday night and not the busiest night so was disappointed overall.

Had Thanksgiving dinner at Spirits and Tales. Everything was wonderful. Beautiful spot atop the Oaklander. Taylor provided excellent service. Special thanksgiving menu offered good choices for all. And all was delicious.
