Located in the Corktown neighborhood of Detroit, TAKOI is known for modern Thai cooking accented with Michigan seasonality, a DIY mentality, and a penchant for local food production. As a core pillar of our mission, TAKOI operates HiO Farm which is located just a mile north of the restaurant. During the height of farm season, the restaurant highlights dishes prepared with HiO produce utilizing the techniques and flavors inspired by Thailand and beyond.


TAKOI, originally KATOI, began as a food truck in 2014, evolved into an Ann Arbor pop-up, and landed as a proper restaurant at 2520 Michigan Avenue in March of 2016. After being open for 11 months, having a slew of fun, and garnering a handful of awards — including a James Beard 'Best New Restaurant' nomination— KATOI was brought back down to earth when it was subjected to arson in February 2017. The day after the fire, the rebuild began, and we opened as TAKOI exactly six months later in August 2017.

From the OpenTable editors: The James Beard Awards, Eater, Thrillist, the Detroit Free Press and more have all gushed about this modern Thai spot that started as a food truck in 2014. The restaurant grows its own produce a mile up the road for dishes like an heirloom tomato salad with chile paste and fried shallots or a killer fried chicken sandwich with papaya salad, served in a colorful, glowing dining room and outdoor patio.

    I have been a huge fan of the restaurant so far. And until today I've only had ala carte I'd recommend not going for tasting menu for a couple of reasons. Generally you' expect individual portion to be given to each person, but you are still served a single plate to share among for four people. I understand the general setup of the dishes is to be shared. But I'd expect it to be portioned individually for the tasting menu. Although the tasting menu included fan favourites from last 10 years, it would have been better to call them out to makes the if it going to be those I/we liked. I would have decided otherwise if I had known the dishes I would be served. Overall, the tasting menu fared poorly vs ala carte personally. It could be a completely different experience for others however.

    Because we had no idea how to order, as it was our first time, we enjoyed the set priced tasting menu. Very good and all of us were satisfied. Parking was a challenge unfortunately, but we will be back.

    Our group of 3 absolutely loved our dining experience at Takoi! The food was amazing. We went for the vegan dishes and were not disappointed. Lots of food to choose from, and the flavors were wonderful. The space is small and unique. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.

    We have never had a bad meal at Takoi. We love this restaurant. My only complaint is I wish the desserts had more variety.

    Takoi never disappoints! Great service, cool atmosphere and fantastic food! Go hungry, leave satisfied. PSA: The crispy spare ribs are still undefeated!
