In 1960, R. J. “Bob” Lee opened The Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo Texas on Route 66, the “Mother Road”. It’s distinctive architecture soon became recognized across the Mother Road as a good stopping place for great steaks grilled over an open flame. The Big Texan is famous for the FREE 72oz steak challenge, which includes eating a salad, baked potato, shrimp cocktail and 72 ounces of beef! Stop in and have a one of a kind experience with large, juicy steaks, cowboys and cowgirls, and take a dive into the Old Wild West!

The cuts are the lowest of the low. You’ll pay a pretty penny just for it to be flavorless and a horrible cut. My boyfriend and I were super excited and were severely disappointed. I got a lunch ribeye and he got a higher cut costing over $45 and it’s not worth it at all. Horrible quality, worst quality I’ve ever had at restaurant.

Booked ahead of time but because of the set up the have we ended up having to queue not once but twice, once to ‘check in’ and then another for a table, really couldn’t move the place was so busy and lines were long. Once a table was ready we were taken upstairs to what was the worst table in the place away from all the atmosphere right outside the restrooms upstairs. 30 minutes before anyone came near us to take an order and then it was a further 20 minutes before our drinks came out. One of the sides was laid on our table 20minutes before our food. Never got the straws we asked for twice. Steaks were good, sides were terrible. 95% of menu was deep fried. Was a really disappointing trip. Noticed that it’s not listed as the number one steak house in Amarillo, think next time we will try another place instead. Oh and before I forget the restrooms were pretty shocking.

We made a reservation on Christmas day and got right in. The service was great and the food was amazing. I had the smothered beef tips and my husband had the chicken fried chicken.

Steak was the butt end of a big slab of meat. Ordered Medium, received Well Done. Never should have put that piece of meat on a plate.

Great experience. Food, service, drinks and desert all outstanding. Highly recommend and definitely be back.

This was a fun restaurant, full of boisterous people having a good time. The meats were delicious, and the food was good. Dessert , coconut cake, tasted of chemicals and was way too sweet. It’s the quintessential Texan experience.

We were a group of 8 dining in for dinner. We have been here multiple times, however, this time we were underwhelmed by the food. Our potatoes were lukewarm and the steaks had a ton of pepper on them. They were served lukewarm as well. The place is fun and is still has great ambiance, especially decorated for Christmas as it was. Sad the food did not live up to our expectations.
