Situated down a quiet side street, on the corner of elegant St Peter’s Square, The Carpenter’s Arms is an independent nineteenth-century pub with a beautiful garden where the food is the star.

We focus on simple, beautifully cooked seasonal food. Our menu and Specials Board change daily: Simply cooked sustainable fish; British meats; delicious vegetarian and vegan dishes and tempting puddings to finish. Simple dishes, big flavours.

We are just as serious about good drink as we are about good food. Our well stocked bar helps keep the relaxed and convivial spirit of a local boozer very much alive.

We operate a rotating list of guest real ales, as well as world wines from just under £30 a bottle. We also serve the only cocktails worth filling the glass for – a negroni for lunch, a martini before dinner, an Old Fashioned when you need a stiff drink, a Margarita for when you want to pretend you’re on holiday and a Bloody Mary for the morning after.

Food was absolutely delicious and service is great. Didn’t love the table right by the bar, the seats were too low for the table and my back hurt, but everything else was fantastic

Great evening amidst Christmas party revellers. Warm and super friendly service. Warm bread. Delish chips. Aubergine hummus delicious too. Mini sausages could have been crispier. Croquettes bit bland. Excellent wines by the glass. Cosy local pub with open fire never disappoints

Delicious lunch. The Carpenter Arms is a proper restaurant with table service and excellent food with the ambiance of a really beautiful pub, cozy with roaring fire in winter

Muscles were not especially warm and the toasted bread should have been toasted more. The sauce with the muscles was good. The rest was very good.

My wife and I came for a mid-week dinner. Really impressed by everything about the place, but especially the food. We both had fish - cod and halibut - which was excellent. Also very good Otter beer on draft. We had a table at one end of the bar, next to an open fire which added to the pleasant experience. We don’t live locally, but, if we did, we would be regulars.

Great kitchen, nice atmosphere, a real neighborhood pub. Almost don’t want to give too good a review so it doesn’t get crowded but the team there deserves accolade.

Fabulous pub with great atmosphere. The onglet was cooked to perfection. Friendly staff and a cosy fire. New owners are doing a great job.
