The Catbird Seat is an intimate, chef-driven restaurant and culinary incubator that provides chefs a creative outlet in an interactive and open kitchen setting. With just 20 seats arranged around a U-shaped counter, guests are offered a front-row view of the chefs at work, crafting a 10-12 course tasting menu that evolves with the seasons.

Currently led by Chefs Tiffani Ortiz and Andy Doubrava, the menu features a dynamic selection of dishes that emphasize sustainability and innovation. Drawing on ingredients preserved from past seasons, foraged finds, and items from their larder, Ortiz and Doubrava showcase their commitment to creativity, resourcefulness, and a modern approach to sustainable cooking.

Since its opening, The Catbird Seat has received numerous accolades, including recognition as one of GQ Magazine’s Best New Restaurants, Bon Appetit’s Best New Restaurants, Wine Enthusiast’s Top 100 Wine Restaurants, and Opinionated About Dining’s Top 100 North American Restaurants.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Tiffani Ortiz & Andy Doubrava

From the OpenTable editors: When it opened 2011, Strategic Hospitality’s flagship tasting restaurant kicked off a new era of fine dining in Nashville. In addition to racking up accolades from GQ and Bon Appétit, Catbird Seat has been an incubator for some of the city’s top chefs. Today, Tiffani Ortiz and Andy Doubrava command the open, counter-style kitchen, turning out innovative New American tasting menus that can stretch to 18 courses of dishes like a walnut cookie filled with chicken liver mousse and berry preserves.

The very definition of a fantastic fine dining experience. Well worth the travel to Nashville just to experience the creative cuisine offered. The venue is tucked away and has an inauspicious entrance. You check in at Patterson House which is a gorgeous craft cocktail dispensary in an adjacent first floor basement. If you arrive early you can have a theatrically prepared libation prior to being escorted by restaurant folks to an elevator to the upstairs dining in a separate building. Once within the inner sanctum you are seated at a horseshoe counter with the kitchen staff on full display. This is the sort of place where the personalities add equal value to the food making the whole experience extraordinary. The entire staff were friendly and charming. The playlist was memorable (for an old guy) including Talking Heads, B52s and Devo. It worked. Sarah the Som was elegant and presented the drinks with intelligence and care. Paired wine and cocktail are separate from the fixed prix and individual selections are available. I thought the pairings were wonderful. Each course was beautifully constructed and progressed with practiced ease. Each chef presented a dish and did so with passionate engagement. The portions, flavors and chew of each offering was spot on. Catbird SEAT holds its own with all the top US restaurants I’ve had the pleasure to experience. If you enjoy the immersive experience of top notch dining this is worth the travel. Fortunately it is in one of the most vibrant cities in the USA.

My favorite restaurant in Tennessee did not disappoint (this was my 4th visit). Amazing food and watching it being plated before your eyes with explanation of each course by the chef elevated the experience.

Music was way too loud. We wanted to know something about the food we were being served, but we couldn’t fully hear what the servers were saying. Wanted to talk to the cooks, but couldn’t make out what they were saying. Would have possibly enjoyed the experience better if I knew what I was eating. Ruined our anniversary experience.
