Since welcoming its first guests in 1773, The Red Lion Inn has earned a reputation for outstanding food and genuine country hospitality. Those traditions are continued today by Executive Chef Jon Sterrett, whose kitchen features contemporary cuisine that is rooted in the region's history and harvests. Emphasizing the use of fresh, local ingredients and a huge proponent of buying locally and sustaining the region, Chef Sterrett regularly updates the Inn's menus to reflect the bounty of each season. Guests choose from the elegant Main Dining Room and the cozy Widow Bingham's Tavern. The wine list offers 500 plus selections, and has received the Wine Spectator best of Award of Excellence for ten consecutive years; Sommelier Tim Eustis helps pair wines with meals. If you would like to dine in the Tavern, please choose Bar when making your reservation.

Limited choice menu. What we had was good. Prices rather high, especially $8 for 4 rolls. Atmosphere very pleasant

Honored reservation on time, though busy day. Place looks tired, needs repairs badly. Food just okay. Service was fair. Would return if in the area, but not make special trip to eat or stay there. Historically important, but desperately needs TLC.

We called ahead to confirm our 5:30 reservation for 12/26 in the dining room. We arrived dressed festively and respectably for the holidays to a noisy and chaotic scene with not a single staff person around the lobby area to greet us or any of the many other guests (many walking around poorly dressed in hoodies and sneakers) clamoring for attention. After being seated we were promptly attended to by an appropriately cheerful and remarkably competent young server. However the meal was a massive disappointment. The filet was served sans crust, butter or jus on a pile of dry mashed potatoes. The image marketing presents of the RLI and the prices it demands do not reflect the poor quality of the product. Major mismatch. Never again. Kudos though to our valiant young server who made the night palatable despite the systemic failures.

Food was terrible. Salmon was dry. Ordered the autumn fall bowl. There was 2 little slices of apple and maybe 2 cubes of butternut squash. Rest was full of lettuce and quinoa. Fish and chips. Too much batter and overcooked. We asked to substitute the fries for coleslaw. It looked like it had been sitting out for days. Went to the tavern ordered an Irish coffee, they gave us coffee with whipped cream. No spoon and no liquor was added! Our server Louis was quite nice. He was overwhelmed with two big tables and us. Other servers were filling spoons and salt and pepper shakers. You’d think they might have helped him. Needless to say, it was quite disappointing.

We had cod with the most fabulous potato pavé - so crispy and delicious. The staff were dealing with big crowds on Christmas Eve and were unfailingly polite, professional, and friendly. We loved it!

Everything was excellent especially the food and the waiter's attention. But they were short staffed for the crowd. So that made the service slow. But the water was very accommodating and did his best to compensate.

We ate in the bar area which has the same menu as the dining room for lunch. It was super busy but I loved the coziness of the bar. TJ e food was delicious and the service was great.
