Located in the heart of the Goodwood Estate and surrounded by the South Downs National Park, The Star & Garter in East Dean offers a delicious selection of freshly cooked, local and seasonal food in a charming dining space with red brick and oak beams. Just a mile down the hill from Goodwood Race Course we are 12 minutes drive from Chichester. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner we try to source our ingredients as locally and as seasonally as possible. Whether you are at a Goodwood Event or walking, cycling or just out for a drive and fancy a decent meal at reasonable prices, we like to think we are one of the best around. We have a great courtyard and garden space which can seat up to 100 people. Freshly ground coffee is available all day. With a mixture of local people and tourists there's always a warm welcome here.

It started so well. When we walked in we were greeted by a table of freshly-baked bread for sale. We were able to taste both real ales on tap which were very different and both excellent. The pub offers a "Ramblers lunch" of small soup and half a sandwich. They both ordered soup and sandwich but, when asked, specified "not the Ramblers lunch". Which is what turned up. The tell me the bread in their half-sandwich was stale. An offer to redeem the situation was made but not till about 10 minutes later - "I've spoken to the chef and..." My own Tuna Poke Bowl was novel for the very traditional environment and perfectly good. I do like the Star & Garter and will go back, but I doubt that my companions will be too keen.

This isn’t the first time we’ve visited. We went back because it was so good. This time was a little different. The rugby was on it was early evening and it was so loud. The menu was also different and not so many options. The food was ok but nothing special. Service was good tho same lovely chap with witty jokes

Last min booking accommodated. Places in front of cosy fire. Tasty suunday roast with all trimmings, nicely cooked and good size portion. Also was given a free mini roast for my dog... thank you

Really lovely pub lunch on a cold January day. Log burner burning nicely. Lovely home cooked food and friendly pub owners. Recommend a drop in.

Lovely meal. Cheery, smiley staff. Warm atmosphere. Child and dog friendly. Helpful storing bikes securely. Generous portions.
