The Woodmans Arms is a beautiful ‘country feel’ pub and dining room situated within the village of Whickham, at the top of the hill, hidden amongst rows of spectacular trees. We are more than just a venue, we are a destination worth travelling to serving classic comforting food made with love, served in cosy surroundings overlooking the most amazing views of the North East.

We are the proud winner of the Newcastle Chronicle’s Eddy Eats’ pub of the year for character, quality, service and value. UK top 3 in the Seafish National Fish and Chip awards 2019 and Diners’ choice award for best ambience. Best British Pub Pie winner for 2020.

We support our local farmers, and work closely with a number of local suppliers to ensure the very best fresh produce. All our food is cooked freshly to order so whether it be a bar snack, light bite, leisurely lunch, evening meal or Sunday Roast it is safe to say that you will in safe hands.

Very nice place and visited a few times before; however tonight 3 from 5 main courses were not to the standard we’ve had previously. The other 2 mains and starters were all good but felt somewhat disappointed.

We went for the polar express Christmas menu from the recommendation of North East Days out. The decorations were lovely but aren't across the whole venue. The food was good but not exceptional and comparing it to the photos of the North East Days Out review we didn't get nearly as much roast potatoes or vegetables and had to ask for gravy (not individual gravy boats like the review said). The normal menu is available too and there was a noisy group next to us. Loved the Polar express themed cocktail but pretty pricey at £10. Undecided if we would go again next year, probably try somewhere else.

Had to ask twice for our drinks. Then they ran out of one of our drinks. The starters arrived before our drinks. We then had to reask for the crayons wed been offeres for our little one. The food was good when it came though.

Try to book table over the phone and l was told the restaurant was full today and we can’t book. I have booked table online no problem and it was possible to book anytime. We arrived 15min late due to accident just next to the restaurant so we phoned restaurant and let them know. When we arrived the manager at the desk was making comments about as being late even though we have phoned and the restaurant looked empty so don’t understand why we were not able to book over the phone. The waiter was very polite and very attentive, pizza was good but disappointed with the booking issue and the table, we always get the same table in the corner just in the front of the pizza oven, which is a bit annoying now.

Firstly, we enjoyed our meal at the Woodmans arms, the food was excellent and the venue is welcoming. Improvements could be made with the hygiene and cleanliness of the dining area. Our table had squashed food underneath and the surface had not been cleaned from previous diners as it was sticky and grimey. In addition, and just to reiterate the food was excellent, but our main and only food we ordered (chateaubriand) took over 40 minutes to arrive. We didn't order starters so we were left waiting when many other diners had received their meals before us. The offer of bread or some other canape would have been a nice touch. At the end of the day, we enjoyed our visit and we will return. But in the spirit of openness, and after spending near on £100 on a meal (including drinks), we feel we could have had a better experience for our 20th anniversary meal, which we informed the restaurant about through the open table app, due to the cleanliness of the dining room and the long wait for our food.
