The Woodmans Arms is a beautiful ‘country feel’ pub and dining room situated within the village of Whickham, at the top of the hill, hidden amongst rows of spectacular trees. We are more than just a venue, we are a destination worth travelling to serving classic comforting food made with love, served in cosy surroundings overlooking the most amazing views of the North East.

We are the proud winner of the Newcastle Chronicle’s Eddy Eats’ pub of the year for character, quality, service and value. UK top 3 in the Seafish National Fish and Chip awards 2019 and Diners’ choice award for best ambience. Best British Pub Pie winner for 2020.

We support our local farmers, and work closely with a number of local suppliers to ensure the very best fresh produce. All our food is cooked freshly to order so whether it be a bar snack, light bite, leisurely lunch, evening meal or Sunday Roast it is safe to say that you will in safe hands.

Terrible service sat us in high tables to have meals even though i asked to be seated at a restaurant table as it was a birthday night out the staff declined and stated to busy it was basically empty in the restaurant Then a table broke nexr to us that a couple were sitting on later Two staff members came over and laughed even though it caused this couple great embarresment i had to go up to the bar twice to get a drink as no one came over the chairs were uncomfotable so i was unable to relax and we left after 35 minutes as we were so disopointed awful atmosphere terrible servise and after driving over 30 mins to get there it was a waste of time and money and ruined my partners birthday

Hi Kayleigh, It is very disheartening to read how you feel about your visit and we are sorry things have affected your experience with us. When making a reservation you had in fact booked the bar area. Whether this was because you wanted it, or that was all that was available at the time, it doesn’t mean we will automatically be able to change this on arrival as other tables would have been reserved in the restaurant. There is a special requests box online that guests use to requested specific allocations It was an unfortunate situation about the chair and the laughter sounds like it was more out of embarrassment from the staff as well. This was dealt with separately with the guests themselves. We are sorry you feel this way, but feel free to send us an email if you wish. Thank you.

Servers could have been more attentive checking for drinks but other than that it was perfect

Booked for an 80th birthday celebration and were delighted to be the first family group to have the Christmas Fayre 2024. It was excellent- good food and great value and the festive decorations were beautiful. Staff were attentive and friendly and we will most certainly be back !

Having recently visited another local competitor, I have to say that the Woodmans did not emerge as the front runner. We had an olive Starter which was mediocre. Whilst there was plenty of small olives in the portion, they had no taste and literally been poured out of a jar; still in the brine. There was nothing accompanying teas and coffees, not even a little biscoff. This is where they could up their game because at another very similar establishment near Stanley, they offer lovely little portions of cake treats with each coffee or tea - all for less than £3. The room temperature wasnt immediately cosy upon arrival at 7pm and we didn't feel able to take coats off straight away. (Although, it was zero degrees outside to be fair).

Just love this place, even though its a good 30 minutes drive for us to go. The place is a must visit. Sunday lunch is outstanding
