Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Chef Brady Williams

From the OpenTable editors: Fine dining with an impressive wine list in a former adult video store? No seriously, it’s fun. James Beard Award-winning chef Brady Ishiwata Williams of Canlis fame throws down a creative and playful Japanese American tasting menu that might include three bean salad, Dungeness crab rice, and culminate in a mountain of the Japanese shaved ice dessert kakigori.

Experience was okay to good. The set menu actually was not bad but for the price we paid, the lackluster explanation of the food, and the very deceptive thing of saying that the service charge is withheld by Tomo made us think that the servers were not getting paid. We had to look up the website if the servers were getting paid and the wording of "tip" was very shady. Proper explanation like Molly Moon where the servers are getting paid would be good to understand. Ended up paying $500+ for a so-so set menu, 1 accompaniment and just 1 non-alcoholic drink and 3 small bottles of sparkling water was way over priced.

It took ages for our food to arrive, our server was nowhere to be found. The food was good, but our server also declined to serve our birthday celebrant a dessert cocktail (it would have been #5 on a >3 hour dinner), our small party was quiet and not rowdy, the rest of our party had only 2-3 drinks, and we had a designated driver. It was startling, especially after the inattentive service. At the end they presented me with a bill for over $700 including a 22% auto gratuity for being ignored half the night and I had to ask them to remove items they never bothered to serve us. It was ok. I liked the vibe, if not our server, but it wasn't worth the $700 check. I love dining out in Seattle but if I'm spending that kind of money, I'll be spending it at places like Archipelago or Herbfarm where you get the food, the service, the ambiance, and none of the sloppy dismissiveness.

I ordered the fish entree that came with a side of braised cabbage. This dish came out very cold, as if it had been sitting for 20 minutes. This fish and cabbage were both cold... urgh.. We also came here to celebrate my husband's birthday... he wanted to order the steak. Our waiter told us that it would take an hour to prepare, and it was pretty large, so the steak dish would cost more than their tasting menu, which was $110 per person... I'm so sorry to say that this was a very disappointing dining experience... don't believe the hype about this place... it's not worth your time or your money...

TOMO offers a stunning ambiance with its sleek, modern design and warm, inviting atmosphere. Unfortunately, while the setting is exceptional, the food fails to meet the same high standards, leaving much to be desired. The meal started with bread and butter, which was disappointingly average. For a restaurant with such a polished feel, I expected something more elevated. The chawanmushi was a pleasant surprise, delicately prepared and well-balanced, earning a solid 4/5, though it wasn’t particularly memorable. The butternut squash dish, however, was a major letdown. The macha sauce felt like an uninspired attempt to innovate, lacking the bold, tangy, and spicy notes that remind me of Venezuela and Mexico. The squash itself had an overpowering sweet, almost burnt raisin flavor that clashed with the rest of the dish. The steam burger was another misstep, feeling completely out of place on the menu. A salty wagyu patty served on a Hawaiian roll lacked sophistication and cohesion, making it an easy pass. The pork chop was the highlight of the night, with excellent flavors and a chimichurri sauce that was on point. However, the experience was marred by the pork being alarmingly undercooked, which made it a risky dish to enjoy despite its good taste.

I thought the food was amazing. I was slightly unsure what to expect, but every dish was wonderful. We did the set menu - usually I expect the small plates to be the stars, but the mains were exceptional! We had the Pork and the steam burger - YUM
