About this restaurant

  • Good for groups
  • Charming
  • Neighbourhood gem
Umaya, where East meets West in a plethora of Japanese inspired small & large dishes. We focus on drawing from the simplicity of flavor in fresh ingredients, while giving it a Western flair. Specializing on the popular Japanese ‘street food’ - think small 'tapas' style dishes that are easy to share amongst friends & family. Our Izakaya grill features a one of a kind charcoal brick that is imported from Japan & allows for the natural flavors of the proteins & vegetables to radiate.

Umaya elevates the typical 'beer garden' concept with hard-to-find Asian dishes. Our menu promotes friends, coworkers, family to enjoy their time together. We carry a wide array of Asian beer, sake & Japanese Whiskey, complimenting the tranquility of the restaurant. The menu will feature seasonal highlights; however, the time-honored staples will always be available. ‘Umaya’ directly translates to a ‘place that tastes good’ in Japanese; it is a place where you can go

Good food and good value. Restaurant was very big and lacked atmosphere. Not enough staff waiting tables so tough to get their attention - they seemed to do double duty - cocktails and waiting tables

The food was excellent, and the waitress and kitchen service was efficient and pleasant although not warm. However, when we arrived, the hostess first offered us a table right beside one of the three - three! - TV screens, which we declined, upon which she rolled her eyes and shrugged, then offered a tiny table up against a pillar. Only when it became apparent that we were on the point of leaving, did she offer a third table, designed for four, which was acceptable. The restaurant was pretty busy, but we had reserved. Also, there was a whole row of tables to one side which had reserved signs on them and which remained empty throughout all of our time there. Soon after we were seated, people were finishing their meal and leaving and by the time we were served the restaurant was half empty. Had she asked us politely to wait five minutes or so, more tables for two would have become available and saved her having to use a four top for us. A little more thought and a more positive and understanding response to our concerns over the tables she initially offered would have been appropriate.

It was efficient for the concert but the service was slow and the food was overpriced. They charged a 3.25% processing fee on top of automatic gratiuity.

My wife and I were sat immediately. That’s the only good thing. The restaurant was not busy at all and it took 15-20 to get water and our menus, another 10 to order, 30 to get the food (which came out incorrectly). Food was mid and over cooked for the price. Took over 40 minutes to get our hot tea so we just told our server, who we only saw twice, to forget it and just give us our check.

Excellent food! Especially the pork belly, which was tender, smoky and had just the right amount of char; and the nigiri and sushi rolls were top notch. Our server was slammed with a very large party and she did the best she could, but I would like to visit again when things are more normal.

As a loyal repeat customer, I love the soup and normally understand the service is slow but today was terrible. They forgot my food even after I reminded her. After sitting there for 45 minutes while my friends at, I had to ask for them to dump mine in a to go bowl so I could get back to work. It took so long for the check my friend had to sit and wait to cover it for everyone because the rest of us had to be back in the office. Really, really disappointing service.

This restaurant is average. The food is passable, but the water tasted strange. It’s not particularly authentic Japanese cuisine. There’s a 3% surcharge for using a credit card. It’s a decent place to get a quick bite, but nothing extraordinary.
