Smithy's Restaurant & Wine Bar

Modern European
A sense of history envelops you even before you’ve stepped through the small black door at the end of a cobbled King's Cross street. Inside lies a dimly-lit Victorian den where candles illuminate intimate alcoves. The character of former blacksmith’s is most notably retained in the original cobbled stone floor and big Victorian gas heaters. A fantastic little Modern European menu has something to hit most spots, with bestsellers being, seared scallops, chorizo and pea puree for starters, and Cote de Boeuf with Béarnaise to share. Daily specials live up to their name.

Booked a dinner for 5 at 9:30pm, which I appreciate was late, and why we booked for a Monday night to ensure that we would be able to have a seating. Lo and behold showing up for our booking and being told AT the dining room that the reservation was for 8:30, and since we had not shown up at the wrong time, they had shut down the kitchen. Since the Kitchen was shut down, there was no way they would open it again and allow us to have dinner. So ended up walking and finding food elsewhere. Amazingly I checked my email the next day and I HAD booked for 9:30, so I called Smithy's and reported the confusion and my annoyance that a leaving do had been messed around because someone at the restaurant had logged the time incorrectly and had not apologised. The lady on the phone noted that she didn't know what had happened, but would talk to the restaurant, but didn’t want to see my booking email to confirm that I had booked for 9:30 saying she could see all the bookings. Funny enough she never searched it or acknowledged that I had booked for the 9:30pm time slot. I asked if there was a possibility of having another dinner slot or at least getting a drink if we were to go back to the bar and was told that the place was shutting down and it was unlikely that we would get anything. So I will now be waiting to see if the place actually stops trading, and if not, I'll definitely not be recommending and rubbishing this place's reputation as much as I can!

This place had been recommended by a friend and looked nice on their website. However the reality was really disappointing. The interior of the place is in dire need of a redesign/refurb. It currently really plays on the history and original use of the building which is nice to point but I don't want to feel like I'm eating in a stable - seated in stalls and with a cobbled floor! The waiter was then pretty rude all evening and, to top it all, the food was then really disappointing. A really chewy and tasteless rib eye steak (n.b. the menu on their website isn't up to date). We won't be rushing back.

Good location close to Kings X, but not so close that you get caught up in station crowds. Sensibly level of choice on menu, which is carried through in well presented and cooked food. Wine reasonably priced plus ability to have cask/craft beers. Friendly relaxed atmosphere with good level of service from staff. Highly recommended.

Too noisy to enjoy dinner and chat in the restaurant on a Friday evening, at least in the half next to the bar, which was playing very loud music. Some of the (already limited) menu options were not available and service was not great. More expensive that I expected for what is more like a bar than a restaurant.

As a converted stables, Smithy's has a great atmosphere and character, and has food to match. The food is pretty uncomplicated, but done very well. The garlic stuffed mushrooms and the salt and pepper squid were very tasty appetisers, and the battered haddock and the seared scallops were great main courses to follow on with. dinner was accompanied by a very nice organic Verdecchio and all reasonably priced. The quiet backstreets location meant that we were able to then sit in the bar and enjoy a couple of drinks afterwards (on a Saturday evening).

My pork knuckle with mustard, apple coleslaw and bubble and squeak caused nothing put pure food envy with my friends. Food was hearty, tasty and great value for money. ALl dishes were exceptional, the ribs and the burger-everyone enjoyed what they ordered. Only negative was the service was very slow as there seemed to be a lack of servers but the food WAS worth waiting for.

We came with our 14 year old daughter as we were staying at the Travelodge just around the corner. The menu is has something for everyone, including vegetarian, and is not a huge variety, but seems to represent good, fresh food. The waiting staff in the restaurant were excellent and we would definitely come again if we needed a proper sit down meal near Kings Cross or just a good pint of beer or a glass of wine in the bar area. Very pleasant, casual and informal. But good food, served well in the old stables. We all had the beer battered haddock and chips, and it was delicious.

We booked a table at the restaurant through Open Table about 20 minutes before the booking. Having received an emailing stating that the restaurant had confirmed the booking we were really disappointed to arrive at the restaurant for them to tell us there was no room. As there was a table in the bar area we agreed to have a drink in there until a table in the restaurant became free, but the restaurant staff did not even approach us again. In the end we ordered some food from the bar. We enjoyed this food and the atmosphere in the bar was great.

We booked Smithy's as a place for 6 of us all coming from different directions, so its close proximity to Kings Cross station was a plus, and tucked away down a back street. The restaurant had a good buzz about it and was lively for a Thursday early evening. The menu options were very good and the wine list too. One observation was that the wine list was very reasonably priced and what we ordered was excellent value for money. The food was well cooked, tasty and portion size was excellent! Service at times was a little slow, merely from the point of view that when we turned up, nobody came over to take a drinks order. After that, service was very good. Overall, I was impressed with Smithy's and would recommend and return!
