About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
  • Neighbourhood gem
Located right in the heart of the town's High Street and Citadel, The George Grill is the restaurant of The George in Rye, one of the finest hotels on the South coast. Our head chef, Oscar, offers you a classic British Grill menu combining his love of charcoal cooking with a Latin twist. The Grill is a firm local favourite and celebrates the best of ingredients and suppliers in the area. At the heart of the kitchen is a wood-charcoal grill, where our kitchen team roast seafood landed that day from fishermen based in Rye Harbour. We also serve Romney Marsh lamb, Aberdeen Angus grass-fed beef and seasonal vegetables from our farmer based in Boughton Monchelsea. Lovingly restored and renovated, this Grade II listed bolt-hole offers a welcoming retreat for design lovers and foodies alike.

Nice venue and well accommodated with the dog. Food was enjoyable and tasty. If I'm totally honest, I think it's a little overpriced, but that's probably the DFL clientele influence.

Lovely food again as always. We visit regularly and always love the food and selection. The Hake main was off the charts good! We also love the service always smiling and so friendly.

Dear Andy Thank you so much for your lovely review, it’s always a pleasure to welcome you back, and we’re thrilled to hear you enjoyed your visit once again. The Hake has quickly become a favourite, so it’s great to know it hit the spot for you too! We're also very touched by your kind words about our team we’re proud to have such a genuinely friendly and welcoming group, and they’ll be so pleased to hear your feedback. The gluten-free fish and chips has indeed been a much-loved staple for many of our regulars. I’ll speak with our chef about the possibility of reintroducing it as a gluten-free option. We’re always happy to hear suggestions from loyal guests like you, and we’ll certainly take this into serious consideration. Looking forward to welcoming you again very soon! Warm regards

Worst experience dining I’ve ever had, service was appalling, staff had no idea what menu was, bar staff don’t integrate with kitchen or front of house (if there is one), it’s a complete shambles. Grill menu stated choice of extras, crispy potatoes, ok that would work better with gressingham duck, red cabbage & beetroot jus better than chips (could have offered new potatoes or dauphinois), the crispy potatoes arrived with 2 dollops on top?..on tasting it was mayonnaise & insipid tomato ketchup ..really? to accompany the duck…won’t be going back, most unpleasant lunch & we were treated as an inconvenience..

Dear Linda, Thank you for taking the time to share your honest feedback following your recent visit. I’m truly sorry to hear that your experience with us was such a disappointment — it’s clear we fell far short of the standards we set for ourselves, and for that I sincerely apologise It’s especially disheartening to read your comments about the service, communication, and overall coordination between the team. Your experience should have been seamless and welcoming, not disjointed or frustrating, and we clearly did not deliver that. While I understand you may not wish to return, I do hope you’ll consider giving us another chance down the line. Your feedback is not only appreciated — it’s being acted on. Warm regards,

Some discrepancies with wine by the glass vs a bottle. I think because wine by the glass is on tap but this is a guess - we would have liked a bottle with the meal but not available!

We ordered the cote de boeuf, the cooking was good but the cut of meat was poor. Grizzly and fatty so we couldn’t eat it all making it poor value for money I expected better quality meat. Service was very good and restaurant was lovely. Whitebait starter was very tasty.
The George in RyeResponded on April 5, 2025
Dear Amanda, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. While we’re pleased to hear you enjoyed the whitebait starter, our service, and the ambiance of the restaurant, we're genuinely sorry to learn that the côte de boeuf did not meet your expectations. We take great pride in the quality of our ingredients, and it’s disappointing to know that on this occasion the cut of meat was not up to our usual standard. Please be assured your comments have been shared with our kitchen team so we can review this further with our supplier. We truly value your input, as it helps us continue to improve. We do hope you'll consider visiting us again in the future and allow us the opportunity to provide a more enjoyable experience. Warm regards,

Great food, nicely cooked. Lovely ambience, a nice olde worlde pub in the middle of Rye. I had booked a table for 1 pm. When we arrived we were met with a man who seemed to have no idea I had booked a table and hurredly pushed two tables together for our party of 4 people. No smile or greeting, "hello" welcome would have been so nice - the simple niceties were missing....
The George in RyeResponded on April 5, 2025
Dear Ann, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re so pleased to hear that you enjoyed the food and the charming ambience of our pub — it’s always lovely to know when guests appreciate what makes our setting special. However, we’re truly sorry to hear about the welcome you received on arrival. This is certainly not the experience we aim to provide, and we understand how important those small gestures and a warm greeting are in setting the tone for a meal. Your comments have been shared with the team to ensure we address this and improve consistency in our service. We really do appreciate your honest feedback and hope we’ll have the opportunity to welcome you back and leave a better impression next time. Warm regards,

Had a nice experience for Mother’s Day. We had a lovely waiter and he was so polite to us and funny, a real honest gentleman, took photos and was very considerate of us. I hope he’s recognised for his service. The food was nice I had a lovely medium rare steak, and the vegetarian option was beautiful in presentation. The desserts was nice but could have been better. The only downside was that one of the chefs was very loud, it started off a little annoying but he got more funnier by the end of the night, but he was a little loud, but he was having fun and we all need more of that these days. The waiter thought was 10/10
