I had heard that high tea in the Palm Court at The Plaza was a must during the holiday season so I was excited to book a reservation two months ago. The experience started out great…the two women checking everyone in were incredibly friendly and accommodating, as was the gentleman who took me to my table. After that, it felt like the rest of the serving staff were just going through the motions of delivering the tea and small tray of finger sandwiches and sweets…all of which were very tasty, but at $155 per person? And that didn’t count the single glass of champagne I ordered which was an additional $30. There was no check back…no one asking if I needed or wanted anything else or to ask how I enjoyed myself. Just very cold and routine…as if the staff couldn’t wait for the day to be over. While I thoroughly enjoyed the ambience…beautiful decorations and Christmas music…all in all it was a big disappointment. And not at all what I expected.

Please note that when you get a reservation you are required to order from the pre-fixe menu if it’s before 10pm. We were not informed of this and it made my birthday celebration really awkward. We sat down ordered a bottle of champagne ($200) and wanted to just have cocktails/shots. The waiter then informed us we HAD to order food AFTER the bottle was already opened. So we ordered $195 caviar. The waiter brought to the table THREE $195 caviars because he assumed that’s what we wanted. Which is a wild assumption to make so we asked for the manager. Once the manager comes over she demands that we tell her who was working the host stand because they should have told us upfront and asked three times what we ordered because she didn’t seem to believe us that we didn’t order three tins of caviar. It was SO uncomfortable. To spend $500 to have such an awkward interaction at a place we really wanted to go made it really not worth the trouble.

Overpriced, bread not fresh on pretze or slider buns. Add exorbitant gratuity on 2 party order. I was there for special occasion, but won’t be back.

Everyone knows what they’re paying for here - entry to the Plaza without staying there for Home Alone driven nostalgia. I was hopeful the food would really be great given the high price tag, but it was mediocre. The slider however was great, as are the cocktails.

We should’ve listened to the reviews and went elsewhere. The food was really below average. The staff wasn’t trained well. The prices were super high (which would’ve been fine had the food not been so poor.) Our waitress, in particular, was barely trying. We didn’t see her much. And she was pretty cold. The food was essentially a pretzel, some somewhat stale/old Rueben sandwich square that looked like it had been sitting out, a slider (burger) which didn’t seem fresh and was cold, plus a few other things like salmon, which we didn’t touch. Seemed to see similar sentiment from others at the restaurant. Just a disappointing meal and wish we had ate anywhere else. We went because the Plaza is iconic, thinking that’d make up for it, but it didn’t.

Really disappointed with our experience, we’d come here from London as a Christmas treat and were so looking to this!! Definitely not as good as other high end hotels that we’ve been too, including The Ritz and Claridges. The food was OK but 2 x pretzels and some cheese fondue for dinner is nothing I couldn’t have got in a bar. Long waits for service too with a 18% charge - not cool and I wouldn’t recommend this experience to a friend! Washrooms are dire.
