Ok, I'm not sure how much needs to be said about Umi that people probably wouldn't assume because of it's insane cost. What I can tell you is that, while I had to save money for an elongated period of time to treat my wife to a once in a lifetime dinner, my assumptions for what it should be were not only met, but exceeded.
Barry, our server, was elite. He had a fantastic knowledge of the food and was ever attentive without being annoying or overbearing. When he wasn't directly attending to our needs, it was as if he disappeared in the restaurant leaving my wife and I to have an incredibly intimate experience in a crowded dining room. Incredible service.
The food was insane. I now know that I had never had what is considered to be high end sushi until this meal. It was downright the best thing I've ever eaten. Chef Shu deserves the accolades that have undoubtedly been given to him. The food's unassuming presentation, combined with his unparalleled ability to cut the fish precisely, brings out the flavor profiles he desires; both rich and complex. The level of mastery and expertise required to make this all a reality is remarkable.
The only reason I gave it 4 stars for value, is that I struggle with saving 3 months worth of expendable money to spend on any single meal. Its not a reflection of the restaurant itself, just my conscience in totality. I would absolutely reccommend!

Special occasion type of restaurant. Expensive, but, WORTH it, kind of, definitely! We’d do it again! Barry was simply amazing! Definitely a bucket list type of experience!

Umi never ceases to amaze. The food is always divine, especially the chocolate maki. The team of servers are always incredible, too. This time we had the lovely Ashley and she was fantastic. She not only recommended the perfect drink for me, she also seamlessly allowed a dessert substitution for the 7 course dinner tour. If you are a fan of upscale sushi, this is a must-try restaurant!

Still excellent after all these years. The fixed price menus feature old standards as well as some fresh innovations. As we've aged, it's a little more difficult to climb the narrow steps and sit in the sunken tables, but fun once you are there! No better fish preparations in the city.
